What is the name/url of ...Website/Blog information:
What is the name/url of your blog?

Welcometofarleyville.blogspot.com

What was the impetus for creating this blog?

As a fan of Chris Farley I would search for my favorite funny man's pictures, videos and other information about his life. I noticed there was not much available online, like he had been forgotten. Having a large collection of Farley memories I decided starting a blog and sharing my colection and findings would add to his Internet precence.

How is your blog different from any other blog of the same topic?

I have never came across another Chris Farley blog, but have seen other celebrity related blogs. Welcome to Farleyville differs from them because I intertwine my personal life with events related to Chris Farley. For example one of my posts reveals how I first became fascinated with the funnyman. Another describes a trip where a group of friends and I visited Farley related landmarks. My latest post is about moving into our new home and how we purchased Chris Farley related shirts to uniform our moving team.

How much time do you spend each day/week on your blog?
It varies I usually post in spurts. I may go months without a post and then do three in a week.

How many visitors/followers does your blog have?

I really do not know how many people follow the blog, but I have recieved feedback from several readers.

How has the news of the existence of your blog spread to attract more followers?

I have created a Twitter account to post when I have new updates, have a YouTube channel to post videos which link back to the site and post on Chris' brother's facebook page. My biggest boost of followers happened when CNN linked a YouTube video I posted to one of their news stories.

Any other information about your blog that you would like to share?

Welcometofarleyville.blogspot.com was created to maintain a lasting legacy of my favorite funnyman, Chris Farley. One thing I have noticed is that some blogs are created to generate revenue. This is one thing that turns people off To a blog, I believe and have not considered.

Blog Questions:
Why do you blog?
>>> Feel I have something to offer that is not out there already

Why do you post on blogs?
>>> Have something to share

What makes you lurk on a website or blog but not post a comment?
>>> Content have nothing to add or in order to make a comment takes to long to sign up

Why do you check in with certain blogs repeatedly?
>>> Updates

Social Networking Questions:
What types of virtual online communities do you belong to?
>>> Facebook, myspace, Twitter

Why do you return to some websites over others repeatedly?
>>> Reputation and trust in content

Why join social networking sites (Facebook, Myspace etc)? What makes you stay engaged on a...Website Questions
What makes you stay engaged on a website (of any kind) for a long period of time?: Topic being something that is of personal or professional interest to me, exciting/interesting content, visually appealing layout, good organization of information, links that lead to other related pages or organizations' information.

What "catches your eye" on a website and makes you linger a bit longer than usual to check it out?: Depends on the topic of the site and its content, but any personal anecdotes/personal stories, especially with pictures, can make me linger a bit longer than usual on a sight. Especially visual images, like pictures. Reading about the statistics of immigration is one thing, but having pictures and stories of Latino families affected by immigration to the U.S. makes the story more personal. Again, this is dependent on website content/purpose.

What makes you leave a website instantly or turns you off from returning to it again?: Pages taking too long to load, broken links, unappealing layout/design, content that is irrelevant to me. It has to catch my eye not just with flashy design, but also be something that I care to read about.

Blog Questions
Why do you blog?
Why do you post on blogs?

What makes you lurk on a website or blog but not post a comment?: From time to time I will skim over or check out a blog, but I am not a big follower of any particular blogs. For me, it's a time thing. I'd rather be catching up by reading over my recent Facebook notifications instead of reading about a Julia Child wannabe's latest expedition in the kitchen.
Why do you check in with certain blogs repeatedly?

Social Networking Questions
What types of virtual online communities do you belong to?: Mainly Facebook, also the WeightWatchers online community (chat boards, and also a "Friends" feature similar to Facebook, with status updates, etc.)

Why do you return to some websites over others repeatedly?

Why join social networking sites (Facebook, Myspace etc)? Why post on a social networking site?: Joining a social networking site, like Facebook, helps me keep up-to-date on the things my friends are up to. Able to see pictures of birthday parties, congratulate people on accomplishments, or reach out to someone more intentionally when it sounds like they have had a bad day. Allows me to know more about what everyone is up to, more so than I would be able to know without this. Combination of status updates + picture sharing capabilities is what I love about Facebook so much.

What makes you feel safe in a virtual online community to post your own opinions/comments?: I probably feel safer than I should on Facebook, but I have reviewed my privacy settings so that only my friends can see my status updates, and only my friends can see my photos. This lets me limit who sees what personal information that I post there, though I am still cognizant of the things I am posting (because I know that it's not an air-tight security that protects them).

What elements of an online community turn you off from becoming a member?: Reputation. MySpace has a big reputation as being sketchy, full of creepshows and underaged kids. Also I am under the impression that more content is made public with MySpace, so I steer clear of that. With Facebook's popularity, though, I don't really feel the need to have a separate account when I can do everything I need to do with just the one.

What elements of an online community entice you to become a member?: Ease of access, having pictures, websites and videos that load quickly and fully.Christinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13537163660639874277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3686756714388826058.post-70060798725812918982010-06-08T21:54:50.236-07:002010-06-08T21:54:50.236-07:00Website Questions:

If it's something I'm interested in and that has importance in my everyday life.

* What "catches your eye" on a website and makes you linger a bit longer than usual to check it out?
-Again the content. I enjoy bells and whistles as much as the next guy but I'm most interested in the information the website provides.

* What makes you leave a website instantly or turns you off from returning to it again?

-Overt bias. Facebook
* Why do you return to some websites over others repeatedly?
* Why join social networking sites (Facebook, Myspace etc)? Why post on a social networking site? To me it is a way to stay in contact with people I may not see often but enjoy interacting with. I have control over who I talk to or interact with and can control when these interactions occur. It is fun to have some frivolous conversations from time to time and others allow me "hear" viewpoints of people I may not normally interact with.
* What makes you feel safe in a virtual online community to post your own opinions/comments? I guess it is partially the anonimity of it? It is easier to type an opinion for me I guess when I don't have to "hear" their body language if they disagree. I am sometimes more fluid in my thinking and expresson when I write versus when I speak. * What elements of an online community turn you off from becoming a member? Site that have no limits on what a person can post. Vulgar language or inference to excessive sexual inuendo. Sites where the people have nothing substantive to say... ever.
* What elements of an online community entice you to become a member? If the people on that site are like-minded with me not necessarily in opinion but in general life philosophy. In other word I would not necessarily like to be on a site with a bunch of devil worshipers.

Online Activity Questions:
* What do you download most often from the internet? Music
* What do you upload to the internet? Very little. Occasionally pictures or work for college.
* What do you spend most of your time online in regards to your professional career? I don't look them up, "listen in" or otherwise participate; it feels like listening in on a party line for some reason, there's something voyeuristic that creeps me out. We all know more people read than participate, so there's an intimate register issue if and when you don't know the people. Only the insiders contribute, so they marginalize. I don't lurk, they come to me and sometimes I read them and sometimes I delete them. For educational ones the questions posed might require so much frontloading or explanation I couldn't begin to respond. Just because everyone can blog doesn't man everyone has something of any importance to say; I'm way over it, really. This questions opens the bigger question of sorting: there's too much crap out there.

3.Even though the researcher last year tried to demonstrate that I really am a participant in a wide quilt of networks, I don't see myself there, at all, and the only one I really use is the SDAWP one, and I barely remember my secret codes. I can't imagine having a network, I do not feel safe at all with them, just the idea that there's no control or protection, that anyone could see what you post is enough to keep me away. But really even it they were highly protected, I have no interest in documenting, publicizing, advertising or otherwise being narcissistic about my small boring life.I don't get it. I realize I don't get it either, so maybe I'm part of the other side of the divide, but I think of friends and relationships the old-fashioned way, voice and face and food, true dialogue and not declaratives with jpegs. I'm not where I see my life as a performance, and I'm not interested in others who do.
It's become sort of monstrous, people doing things in order to document it, in order to...matter? To whom? for what? It's a weird anti-social, un-spiritual public face that we misperceive as a real face. So I guess the question is: How can you be real in a public space?

4 Online My students upload work to a classroom website (minnicksville.org) which I should visit more than I do. I up or down load very little. There's a blog I receive daily (two actually, the Writer's Almanac is the other)on perfumes and scents. They had a link to a four-hour symposium at Parson's on the design of scents. Fascinating, really, but the idea of sitting in from of the computer, listening/watching for that much time, freaks me out. I like TED because the chunks are manageable - why wouldn't I use the computer for sustained"learning."Christinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13537163660639874277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3686756714388826058.post-29916187423869118252010-06-07T18:51:21.797-07:002010-06-07T18:51:21.797-07:00SDAWP Fellow Part 1 (Interview completed via email...SDAWP Fellow Part 1 (Interview completed via email by Christine Kane)

1 Websites Probably the only ones I spend much time on are the NYT and TED. Both share an almost infinite number of categories and thoughtful writers in those categories, so although their realms are different, there are many rooms. What they share also is a high degree of reliability, they are vetted, the writers/presenters are experts and know they're in a highly public forum, so there's a social and peer review aspect that's functioning. I may occasionally go to other websites, and do if I'm researching something, but really nothing on a regular basis. Interestingly, websites that have imagery of the outdoors is something that will catch my eye, a window where there is none, and any level of crankiness, punditry or rant will turn me off, also any type of objectification or exploitation of humanity or animals, women in particular, really is a turn off. I'd like to reply but know that would be an invitation. As far as educational sites, my teaching contexts have been so unique, and my curriculum so.. .a-typical... that I rarely, rarely use them. I do remind my students that if they're stuck, or absent, to use the tools, "how to write a summary" or "conclusions" just to have something, to know there are answers and suggestions out there, but to really look at real text when they want to problem-solves as writers. Poorly designed sites, visually, ones that look too business-y, in general are uninviting. I'm visual, so I appreciate design, imagery and text, organized and blended well.Christinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13537163660639874277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3686756714388826058.post-82106351331129576952010-06-07T18:48:34.329-07:002010-06-07T18:48:34.329-07:00SDAWP Fellow (Interview via Email from Christine K...SDAWP Fellow (Interview via Email from Christine Kane):

Website Questions:
* What makes you stay engaged on a website (of any kind) for a long period of time?
If I stay on one website for a long time it's to read and get "fed" with new information (ex website: TED.com)

* What "catches your eye" on a website and makes you linger a bit longer than usual to check it out?
I'm not a website browser AT ALL. I go to websites per recommendation of friends/peers, or am directed there by list serves and
online news periodicals.

Blog Questions:
* What makes you lurk on a website or blog but not post a comment?
I like to read what others have to say, especially in response to information on Edutopia and/or TED. I haven't joined in the
conversation yet, because I'm not reading to engage in conversation and therefor know that I won't return to read the response(s).
I'm just there to get divergent viewpoints on a topic. In addition, I feel there are way too many people out there talking without
listening, and I don't want to be that person. I only want to post if I feel I have something new or critical to say.

Social Networking Questions:
* What types of virtual online communities do you belong to? Why post on a social networking site?
It's a really fun way to interact with my friends from overseas and my family and friends from around the US. I like that I have to
access to interesting things my trusted friends post, and the freedom to view it or ignore it. In addition, posting what I believe are
interesting videos, articles, and ideas, is a quick way to get the message out to those who may be interested. Anther fascinating
aspect for me, is that it comes as a surprise sometimes as to who will be interested and respond to a post or sharing.

* What makes you feel safe in a virtual online community to post your own opinions/comments?
I only share my information/posts with friends and friends of friends.

* What elements of an online community turn you off from becoming a member?
Too much information/don't have time

* What elements of an online community entice you to become a member?
Free access to ideas/information/pictures.
